Adiabatic cooling saves water for automotive manufacturer
The Challenge
One of the world’s leading automotive brands with a UK production facility has complex temperature control demands – with water usage and the associated equipment identified as areas for significant savings. ICS Cool Energy’s replacement of cooling towers for an adiabatic system has saved money, increased efficiency and protects against legionella bacteria.
The Solution
An adiabatic cooling system is the sustainable alternative to cooling towers. With the plant’s existing cooling tower units producing between 4-5mW each, despite the site only requiring 2mW, it was clear the operating needed a review.
ICS Cool Energy designed a new system that delivers substantial savings, replacing all but one of the cooling towers with an adiabatic system which has a non ferrous water circuit feeding into the company’s 100,000 litre sump tank. The water is then supplied directly to cool the condensers within the compressed air dryers.
The remaining cooling tower was cleaned and isolated from the circuit to provide a back-up.

The Result
