University of Liverpool keeps its cool with MRI scanners

Zurück zu Fallstudien

The Challenge

One of the UK’s leading life sciences universities has specified an ICS Cool Energy high performance energy efficient cooling system for its busy MRI scanners in its acclaimed Magnetic Resonance and Image Analysis Centre (MARIARC).

The Solution

Pioneering research takes place at Liverpool University and an efficient cooling system was demanded for its MRI scanner systems which create detailed images of soft tissue for research projects and also to provide a diagnostic service for the NHS.

MRI machines use super conducting magnets and the process creates intense heat which has to be controlled for the lifesaving scanners to operate properly.

ICS Cool Energy replaced the university’s three existing chiller units with two energy efficient TAEevo systems (The i-Chiller has since been introduced) both with five bar pumps, ensuring that through the system’s robust construction and extremely precise water temperature control, a reliable and cost-effective means of cooling the sensitive equipment.

The Result

ICS Cool Energy said “We ethically removed and disposed of the existing three units that were on site as they were beyond economic repair.

“Our engineers positioned the new units and rebuilt the pipework, electrical, mechanical and interconnecting signalling to the remote control panels. As the existing chillers had pumps on board under a condenser, we needed to make sure that the new units were similarly set up and situated the pumps behind the new chillers; making them much easier to service.”

Duncan Robertson, Scientific Manager at the University of Liverpool added: “The Engineers from ICS Cool Energy did a fantastic job replacing the chillers at the university; the installation was very smooth and very professionally managed.”
