A clever new cooling system has been installed at world- renowned Sheffield University by ICS Cool Energy and electrical contractors Rotary Yorkshire. It integrates with the existing ground source heat pump and BEMS (building energy management system) to cool four buildings.
Sheffield University – one of the world’s top 100 – had a demanding brief when it extended its Design and Prototyping Test Centre (DPTC) which required the use of its existing ground source system and 11,000 litre buffer vessel to supply water at approx. 7°C for the whole site, integrating with the BEMS.
The four buildings needed a capacity boost to provide effective year-round cooling, and the solution was designed by ICS Cool Energy with contractor Rotary Yorkshire, working with a local design consultancy.
The new chiller starts work when the ground source system reaches its maximum capacity, cooling the large thermal store back to temperature for the continued supply of 7°C water for the site.

The design developed and installed by ICS Cool Energy and Rotary Yorkshire was selected as the University’s contract winner, providing an energy-efficient and powerful extension for the existing cooling system for the buildings that are in year-round use as a pioneering education and research centre.
