ICS Cool Energy created a solution to a ‘three in one’ challenge for a world-renowned research University in London. As part of the university’s investment in the new ICT centre, with blade servers operating 24/7, a high performance cooling system was required. It also had to offer the lowest possible carbon footprint with maximum energy efficiency and be quiet in operation.
Designed by leading temperature control specialists ICS Cool Energy in conjunction with Chartered building services consultancy Fowler Martin, the solution was based on free cooling technology that uses the ‘free’ ambient air temperatures to help chill the process water. And the unit was also fitted with a low sound package. The chiller itself is a high efficiency ‘A’ rated 400kW Aptus unit that was fitted with an integral free cooling coil, helping to minimise demands on space.

With an anticipated energy savings of 70% and a system payback of three years, ICS Cool Energy’s solutions offers high power with the lowest possible carbon footprint as well as low noise. It was a challenging brief, explained ICS Cool Energy. “It was a complicated project to deliver and we have a longstanding relationship with the facilities team who always demand integrated solutions that take into account the detail as well as the big picture. Free cooling and the Aptus chiller was the obvious route to take to meet the low energy spec but we also added in extra details for further performance boosts such as variable pump flows,” they said.
