With talks of heatwaves on and off over the last few weeks, it shouldn’t have come as a great surprise that we were on for record temperatures. However, when a heatwave strikes in the UK, we’re often unprepared to handle temperatures pushing 30°C as equipment has often been specified at much lower ambient temperatures.
The hottest June day since the summer of 1976 was experienced yesterday when mercury levels hit a sweltering 34.5°C (94°F) at Heathrow. The heatwave has seen five sizzling days in a row with temperatures exceeding 30°C. Areas such as offices and warehouses without air-conditioning became unbearable environments to work in and some schools even had to close. Places where air-conditioning never normally needed to be considered was a necessity.
The cost of a week of weather you’d only expect to find in the Mediterranean at this time of year can be huge. Equipment and staff overheat and productivity grinds to a halt.
Temperature Spikes and Process Cooling
Process chillers, cold storage and air-conditioning or HVAC equipment in particular is put under great strain which can result in a breakdown. If you’ve experienced a chiller breakdown without a contingency plan or an experienced engineer to call on, you’ll know well how much time and production can be lost, not to mention the disappointed customers.
But don’t worry, there are many ways you can protect your operation and/or production, we have put together an e-guide which offers practical advice and steps your organisation can take to ensure that your productivity is never compromised.
